Applying the Adwords API

We’ve been an MS Gold Certified Partner for the past few years, and sometimes we are rich in developers. We assigned a couple of our developers to apply the Google Adwords API in developing some tools for use by our PPC Ad Managers.

Caught Wrong Footed by Google

A couple months into our development exercise, Google launched the desktop editor. That put a bit of a wrinkle in our development plans. While the desktop editor didn’t displace what we’d been working on, what we had been working on didn’t exactly complement the desktop editor.

Not to worry, we pressed on with our development efforts. A couple months later, Google introduced position preference. Another great feature. I emailed Google customer service, asking them to please keep us apprised of all their future development plans… Of course I’m just joking. They never replied to my email, so what was left to do but pull the plug on the development project.

Google Crystal Ball

Since then, Denver PPC has developed some tools to help us with ad split testing and competitor analysis, but none involving the Adwords API. In some ways I feel vindicated to having been caught wrong-footed by Google; we identified an obvious need, and allocated programmers to fill it.  No surprise that Google noticed the same gaps, and beat us to the punch.  Now, for us, we’ve had our fill of the Adwords API. To all those using it to develop new PPC tools, may your pockets be deep, your developers keen, and your intelligence about Google’s future development plans far more informed than were ours.
