Website Optimizer is a free tool by Google which allows an advertiser to split traffic from all sources across two or more landing pages.  The program statistically evaluates the performance of alternative pages based on conversions.  Each iteration is called an Experiment.  An experiment succeeds when one of the alternatives has been determined to have statistically outperformed all other alternatives.

Once an experiment has been completed,  then an Advertiser may continue to refine the winner.  This can go on experiment after experiment for as many iterations as an Advertiser chooses.  Generally an Advertiser finds it economical to run at least two or three experiments, and often many more, depending on the improvement conversion rate, and the cost of running the experiments.  It’s not unusual for an advertiser to improve conversion rates by 50% or more based on three rounds of experiments.
